Build a Website - in Dreamweaver

Before you start creating a website or even a webpage, there must be a working plan.

1/. Firstly what is the website going to be about and plan your site. You could choose a single theme:

Sports, Travel, Foods of the World, Famous People, Places You Would Like to Visit, Places You Have Been To.

Have a look at RMWebed and the links and sub0links to get an idea. The website has six links including the essential Home Page and off each webpage there are at least six sub-links.

Your website does not necessarily need to have one theme (as is not the case with my website), you could have a multi-themed website with each webpage having a different topic.

Then plan on having sublinked pages off each main webpage.

2/. Then decide upon how many linked pages (and possibly sub-linked pages). As this is an eight week subject, it is envisaged there would be at least eight webpages, possibly more with sub-links off the main page.

3/. Having done the initial planning next it's content researching.

Graphics are really important.

It's important to have good quality images.

Your image sizes should be no more than 900px wide. If you want to you can use small images and link to the larger size. (See the Links tab, which shows how to do this).

Ensure all images are kept in the same folder as the webpages, otherwise they will not load. Also ensure you do not move the images or pages, as they will not load until you have re-linked them.

Create a new folder my_website.

You'll also need text.

The text based content should not be a direct copy/paste, but an edited version of what you have researched and have accompanying image/s for.

Use plenty of whitespace (which does not necessarily need to be plain white, to break up the content). Use a sentence as a paragraph to assist in achieving this, as well you could use dot points.

4/. The design layout. Use tables and nested tables to hold your content. Nested tables are tables within tables and are quite useful for aligning images and text. (See the Tables link).

5/. You also need to think about a colour scheme. You do not need to use too many colours, however you could consider one colour for each main webpage.

6/. Video. You can include a video on a webpage, which could be your own or a downloaded one, or a YouTube. (See the add Video link).

Before you start anything, have a look through these page links.
