Star Ferry | |||
The Star Ferry is one of Hong Kong's cultural icons. These green and white ferries have been making the harbour crossing since 1898. The busiest route is Central to Tsim Sha Tsui. This seven minute journey is a tourist attraction in itself. It offers the best view of the Hong Kong skyline and we recommend you take it twice, in daylight and at night. The night-time trip shows one of the world's great harbours at its best. | |||
The ferries run every five to ten minutes from 6.30 a.m. until
11.30 p.m. (Click here for schedule
supplied by Star Ferry) The coin-operated turnstiles do not give change.
If you travel on the upper deck, you can get change from the ticket
window. The lower deck entrance does not have a ticket window. Once you
have passed the entrance, you will see another tourist attraction -
souvenir shops! |
The Central terminus is at Edinburgh Place however, most people call the whole area "The Star Ferry". Don't ask the taxi driver for Edinburgh Place, he won't know what you are talking about! (Click here for some useful Cantonese!) Before you get on the ferry at Central, visit the rickshaw drivers. These elderly men have picked up English from the hundreds of thousands of tourists they see every year. The drivers don't really drive you anywhere, you can pay to sit in the rickshaw and have your photo taken though. (Make sure they do not over charge you!) |
The Kowloon terminus is in Tsim Sha Tsui. Tsim Sha Tsui is a tourist mecca and is very busy. The Star Ferry is the cheapest way to get to Tsim Sha Tsui from Central District (on Hong Kong Island) and the view is thrown in for free! |
