Japan - Transport

About the Country

Travel within Japan is expensive. Rail is the best form of travel,as it is the cheapest and generally reliable. Within major cities there is the Shinkansen (bullet train), which is very fast and efficient. There are also local trains within cities and towns.

Airlines operate domestic routes, but travel for instance between Tokyo and Nagoya is faster on the bullet train, taking into account airport transfers and airport distances from town.

Taxis are very clean, but expensive and the door will not open for you at the destination until your fare is paid.

Ferries are used between the islands.

Buses are also used in local areas.

Taxis are popular and have door releases that only let you out when you have paid the fare.
