Check the HDD (Hard Disc Drive)

Check the system requirements. If you’ve decided that you want to install a new operating system, you’ll first need to figure out which one you want to use. Operating systems have varying system requirements, so if you have an older computer, make sure that you can handle a newer operating system.

  • The machine has 4GB RAM (Random Access Memory), which is like the working space on a conventional school table.
  • The HDD is 120GB, small by most standards, as many laptops today have 500GB, if not 1TB (Terabyte). There are 1000GB in 1 TB.
  • On the laptop with 120GB, it will load the OS.
  • The next step is to attach an external optical drive - a DVD drive, so the OS can be installed from the disc.
  • If there was still an older OS on the laptop and there was Internet access, you may have been able to install the OS by download. That is not the case with this laptop.
